I trained as an Occupational Therapist (OT), and worked primarily for Social Services in the community with both adults and children with disabilities. After the birth of my first child in 1998 I stopped working as an OT to enjoy full time motherhood. This I loved but when my son was about 18 months old I felt I would like to do something extra. A friend who had attended Music with Mummy classes with her child suggested I considered training as an agent myself – this would be doing something that I loved, working with children and singing! So in April 2000 following my training I set up classes from my Thornbury home. I started with just two classes but 8 years on I now run six Music with Mummy Classes and two Jolly Babies’ classes from a local church hall. In addition to this I regularly run classes for a local nursery school and Twins Club. The job is very rewarding and allows you to do as little or as much as you choose. It fits in perfectly with being a mum, my children aged 4, 7 and 9 years have all come along to classes with me when they were younger and for me, choosing to only run classes during term time allows me to be there when my children need me. The job also allows you to make such a difference to the children’s lives – watching a child who had speech difficulties sing her first few words was a fantastic feeling, knowing you had helped and encouraged her in that milestone in her life.
